The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is an organization of women dedicated to mission education and support, spiritual growth, and joyful service to the Lord. The LWML motto, “Serve the Lord with Gladness,” is based upon Psalm 100:2. The Holy Cross LWML is comprised of around ninety women who joyfully serve in a variety of ways.
Many women serve coffee during fellowship hour on Sunday mornings, serve special church dinners or other special events, and provide meals for the students at the University Lutheran Center. Others serve during weddings, anniversary or wedding receptions, or funeral dinners. Many assist with the upkeep of the kitchen, church library, and nursery. Others visit parish members in hospitals or care homes as well as homebound members. Some send Christian materials to those on the Cradle Roll. Others decorate for our General Society meetings.
The General Society hosts four meetings a year. Meetings are held in September, January, March, and May. All ladies of the congregation are invited to attend. LWML members may also choose to join a smaller fellowship and service group called a circle. The Lydia Circle meets the second and fourth Thursday afternoons from September through May. They focus on making quilts for Lutheran World Relief and other missions. The Sarah Circle meets the first Tuesday evening of the months: September, November, December, February, and April. They focus on Bible studies and supporting local missions with ingatherings.
The LWML provides monthly support to former members who are involved in mission work: the Murrays, the Jensens, and Maren Nielsen. Contributions collected during the fellowship hour for coffee help support these mission efforts as well as other mission projects.
LWML members also financially support “mite” projects, the Kansas District and national LWML mission projects. All Holy Cross members are encouraged to financially support the LWML “mite” projects.
